Peebles County v Broomhall Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 22 May 2010 at 13:00
Broomhall Cricket Club Lost by 58 runs

Match report With glorious weather of 25 degrees Broomhall travelled to Peebles to try and keep the run of recent form going. After winning the toss Broomhall decided to bowl first on a pitch that certainly looked to have more in it for the bowlers than the batters. A good opening spell from Hoefling and Breen with the new ball produced one early wicket. No Peebles batsman really got going but one too many short balls from Broomhall attack provided those batsmen at the wicket and easy opportunity to capitalise with boundaries coming regulary. A few bowlers will have learnt a valuble lesson on how to bowl on slow pitches with variable bounces. With the run rate ticking along and several bowling changes tried without success Ian "the Red" Barron came to bowl. The action of right arm round (in cap) was just the right pace and Ian bowled steadily in his 10 overs conceeding only 14 runs and taking too wickets. Ahmed also came on at the football pitch end to bowl well, picking up his first 5 wicket haul for the 1s. Somehow the Peebles batsman managed to get to a total of 198 in their allotted 50 overs. 198 would prove to be a significant challenge on a deteriorating pitch. After some cold showers and rehydration (and a poor tea spread) between innings the Broomhall batsman set about chasing the runs. A good opening stance of 35 between Hoefling and Scott saw off the new ball. This was a great start especially with some balls leaping off a length and others rolling past ankles. However Scott eventually fell on 25 after playing slightly early on a short pitched delivery from Slater. Broomhalls middle order never really got going and it wasnt helped by the Grant being dismissed caught behind for just 4. From 52 for 2 Broomhall slumped with a charactersitic batting collapse to 82 for 9. The only thing left for Broomhall was to chase valuable batting points. A magnificent last wicket stand of 56 secured an extra couple of points. Some nice hitting from Breen (36) and Gravenstein (16 Not Out) was an example to those that went before them that a bit of application on a poor wicket can pay dividends. Hopefully some of the other higher order batsman will have watched and learnt how to defend the straight ones and hit the bad/wide ones. All in all a poor result on a disgrace of a wicket, but in division 4 we are going to have to learn a quick lesson on how to play on such conditions..Bowlers and Batters!
