Broomhall Cricket Club 1st XI v Edin Uni Staff on Sat 10 Jul 2021 at 1300hrs
Broomhall Cricket Club Won By 24 Runs
Match report
Broomhall made it 5 wins from 7 this season with a 24 run win over Edinburgh Uni Staff yesterday.
Broomhall won the toss and batted first and looked in some early trouble at 19-2, but a 69-run partnership between Ieuan and Chris got us back into the game. Ieuan was eventually caught by a good catch at slip for 30.
This brought Scott to the crease and runs were flowing freely at this point as Chris started hitting some big boundaries to bring up his 2nd half-century of the season.
At 137-3 we looked set to post a big score, but then Scott fell for 27, closely followed by Chris for an excellent 62.
Runs started to dry up after this but there was an excellent end of innings performance from Donny (Bairstow) Robertson, with what ended up being some vital runs including the shot of the day as he crunched the opposition skipper into the trees for 6.
Broomhall finished with 196-9 off of 40 overs.
Broomhall made the perfect start with the ball as Ieuan took a wicket with the first ball of the innings. Things then got even better as Mike Warren took one of the greatest catches The Cairns has ever seen. A low, one-handed diving catch down to his right-hand side off Chris’s bowling. You kind of had to see this to believe it but it was an absolute stunner.
Edin Uni Staff started to steady the ship after this, but runs were slow, and the required run rate was going up. In the usual Broomhall fashion, it was Phil that made the important breakthrough but not in the usual fashion it was 2 more stunning catches, this time on the boundary from the club’s specialist scorer Joe to take the 4th & 5th wickets. We looked in an excellent position at this point but let Edinburgh Uni staff back into the game again as their skipper started to find the boundary regularly.
With 10 overs to go, Edin Uni staff needed just under 90 runs to win, but tight bowling & fielding meant they were unable to keep up with the required run rate. Scott removed the opposition captain thanks to another great catch, this time from Neil.
Going into the last over Edin Uni staff needed 26 to win, but a wicket and a few dot balls from Chris resulted in it being a (relatively) comfortable victory for Broomhall.
Man of the Match: Joint award this week to Chris & Joe. Chris for his 62, and Joe as everything he touched in the field turned to gold.
A great team performance this week as we remain 3rd in the table. Also, it great to see some old faces down at the club yesterday to spectate! Special thanks to Ian who chucked on the whites for the first time in over a year to make sure we had a full team.
Next week the 1st XI play Dunbar and the Sunday team are up against Murrayfield. Both games at home.
