Broomhall Cricket Club 1st XI v Drummond Trinity 2 on Sat 07 Aug 2021 at 1300hrs
Broomhall Cricket Club Lost By 24 Runs
Match report
All good things must come to an end, and after 6 wins on the bounce Broomhall fell 24 runs short against table-topping Drummond Trinity today at The Cairns.
Drummond batted first and things got off to a bad start as, after a handful of overs, a Hoefling effort ball caught keeper Simons already dodgy finger resulting in a trip to the hospital for Simon. With no other wicket keepers in the team, it was Ali (Alan) Gudgin who stepped up and put the gloves on. It was if it was meant to be, as 2 balls later the Drummond opener edges behind and Ali takes a stunning, reaction catch - sending the fielding team into raptures.
This brought the dangerous Faizal to the crease, and Drummond started to build a 2nd wicket partnership. It was Thomas that made the breakthrough, 2 balls after getting hit for one of the biggest sixes ever seen at The Cairns, he found the outside edge and another sharp catch from stand-in keeper Ali saw the 2nd wicket fall.
Fazail continued to look dangerous and passed 50 as Drummond started to rack up a big score. Wickets for Thomas, Paul Gudge and Callum H left them 157 for 5 at 30 overs. In the last 10, Drummond tried to push for a big score but wickets started to tumble. Thomas eventually removed Faizal for 75 and late wickets for The Hoff and Ieuan meant Drummond were bowled out for 211 with 3 balls remaining.
Simon had returned from the hospital by this point. With his finger popped back in place, taped up and injected - He was like a superhero as he headed out to open the batting with Ieuan.
Things started very well, and a 61 opening partnership put Broomhall on top before Ieuan was bowled for 23. Thomas and Simon continued to pile the pressure on, and at halfway we were 93 for 1 and praying for the rain to come.
Simon ended up “retired burst” with 39 not out. Captain Hoff came in and after a couple of cracking sixes was unfortunate to be caught on the boundary for 16. Wickets started to tumble quickly after this. Firstly Thomas for an excellent 39, then followed by Ali and James left us 167 for 5.
Donny and Angus (or Dongus as they are collectively known) put in a courageous effort to try and get us back into the game, but it wasn’t to be as we fell 24 runs short of the target.
MOTM – Simon, excellent innings after dislocating his finger. Shout out to Thomas aswell for top batting and bowling.
DOTD – Joe Chalmers. Nobody playing deserved it, so Joe gets it as he put up a 3 paragraph FB post about him scoring 2 last weekend.
Shout out to Drummond for a good game played in the right spirit. Next week we are away to Dunnikier as we continue our promotion push!
